The pig industry has traditionally used a Large White terminal sire over a Large White X Landrace dam, but recently there has been increased use of three-way crosses using Hampshire or Pietrain boars as "terminal sire". Sire lines from these breeds are linked to increased piglet vigour, improved weaning performance, faster growth rates and lower mortality in all phases of production. This factsheet is an independent comparison conducted by the Pig Development Centre - a study of piglets from each of three breed crosses evaluated on the same commercially-based research farm - an impartial assessment of the major intrinsic differences between modern sire breeds for the benefit of farmers and their advisors.
