In 1976 there was an influenza H1N1 virus outbreak at Fort Dix which led to a government over-reaction and a mass $135M vaccination programme to vaccinate every man, woman, and child in the United States with swine flu vaccine because of the fear of a repeat of the 1918 flu pandemic.

Of the 45 million Americans vaccinated, there were 500 cases of Guillain-Barre syndrome paralysis, including at least 25 deaths, while the actual "swine flu" virus killed only one of the 230 soldiers who had become ill.

The U.S. government spent $90 billion settling lawsuits, the 1976 outbreak failed to turn into the predicted pandemic and David J. Sencer was fired as director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control.

Effectiveness of current 2009 influenza vaccines against the new (Mexico) Swine Flu virus is as yet uncertain.
